Barn Hunt FAQs

Does the rat get hurt?

No, they are put in PVC tubes with bedding.  We handle the tubes carefully.  Dogs never have access to the rats inside the tubes.

Are there any special COVID rules?

Yes.  Please follow this link to the most current precautionary rules set by the Barn Hunt Association: BHA Temporary COVID-19 Rules

Registration & Titles

Can my dog earn a title for barn hunting?

Yes!  Barn Hunt is an independent sport, but titles are recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), the United Kennel Club (UKC), and the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC).

To see how to get your title recognized, go to barnhunt.com and to the FAQs section.

You can find a link to the AKC title application here on our website under the 'More Info' menu item.

Can My Dog Participate?

Does my dog have to be vaccinated?

Yes, for the safety of all the dogs that visit our facility, vaccinations are required.

Regular vaccinations from your vet will often include "lepto," but we encourgage you to discuss with your veterinarian the leptospirosis vaccine to determine if it is right for your pet.

Leptospirosis in dogs is a bacterial infection that spreads through the bloodstream. Dogs typically contract leptospirosis through direct contact with urine from an infected animal. Open sores on the skin can increase the chances of contracting this disease. The bacteria infiltrate a dog’s body by burrowing into their skin. If your dog swims in, passes through, or drinks infected water, or if they come into contact with infected soil or mud, they are at risk.

Leptospirosis traditionally was thought of as a disease in rural areas; however, this is changing. In busy cities, leptospirosis can be spread to dogs via rodents and city wildlife and areas of standing water.

The leptospirosis vaccine has improved drastically in the past decade, making it less immunogenic, which in turn causes fewer possible side effects.

Are mixed breeds allowed?

Absolutely! This is a great sport for all dogs of any age.

Can a female in heat participate?

Yes, though as a courtesy please consider panties or diaper if she's messy.

Entries & Costs

Can I enter my dog on the day of the trial?

Yes, we allow day of trial entries as long as the trial isn't already full. Please check trial status before making the trip to our facility.

How much does it cost?

You'll find all the cost information for training and trials here on our website under those menu items.

Do I need a PayPal account to use your online entry system?

No. Once you've selected the trial(s) or training classes a PayPal link will open which allows you to use either PayPal or your credit card to pay for your entries. Note that there is a small convenience fee charged for using online entries, but since we fill-up on a first come, first served basis you're much more likely to reserve your spot... and, you don't have to find an envelope and stamp.

Can I mail-in my entry?

Yes. If you want to complete the entry form and mail it in with your personal check, you'll find a link to the BHA website under our 'Trial Registration' menu.  Please be aware, however, that our trials fill-up on a first come, first served basis, and may be full by the time your entry reaches us in the mail.

What if I need to cancel?

We ask that you please provide at least a 24 hour notice if you're not going to be able to attend a Private Lesson for which you signed up.  If it's a Group Lesson or Trial, we'll miss you, but since we have to be there anyway your absence won't impact us.  There are no fees imposed for cancelling, however, we cannot refund the small portion of your payment that was collected by PayPal and the Online Entry System since we don't receive that money as part of your payment.
